Slot swells

Coasts behind islands only get swell from a few directions. A slot is a narrow gap between islands or shallow banks that lines up with the open ocean. When a storm sits in exactly that line, its swell threads the gap and a stretch of coast that is usually flat lights up, sometimes once in years. SwellFeed maps every slot below from coastline and seafloor data, and its Strike Missions flag a storm the moment it lines up with one.

Providence Channel

Florida Atlantic

A strong hurricane east-southeast of the Bahamas, moving west-northwest, lines its swell up with the deep channel between the Little and Great Bahama Banks.

Hurricane Isabel, September 2003: swell ran through the Providence Channel onto a 10-mile stretch of coast and peaked at 14 ft at Delray Beach. Source
